Yorktown American Legion Post #1009                   Volume No. 1                Issue No. 9                          March / April 2009

District Veterans Rep to Speak at May Meeting

Pass the word to ALL VETERANS!  The District Veterans Representative from Congressman John Hall’s
office will be speaking at our May 14th Post #1009 Meeting.  The speaker, Lisa DeMartino, will be available to
meet with veterans to discuss problems with benefits and assist veterans in navigating the VA system.
Congressman Hall’s office has had positive results in several recent high profile veterans’ cases regarding
disability payments and military medals and awards.  If any of our Post members are aware of someone who
could benefit from Ms. DeMartino’s help please let them know about the meeting.  The meeting begins at 7:30
    PM.

Chapel of the Four Chaplains Ceremony

On Sunday, February 1st the Post held its annual Chapel of the Four Chaplains Ceremony at the Post
Hall.  We were honored to have as distinguished guests County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz, Mr. Terrence
Murphy representing Assemblyman Greg Ball, and Rev. Tony Mecca the pastor of Grace United Methodist
Church.  Members of the Order of the Purple Heart and the Korean War Veterans Association also joined our
Post members in the solemn service honoring four chaplains.
These four chaplains were aboard the troopship ‘Dorchester’ when it was torpedoed and sunk during World
War II.  These men of faith gave their life preservers to those in need, then calmed and prayed with their
fellow shipmates as the ship sank into the icy North Atlantic.  Those who survived the sinking gave reports of
their bravery, cooperation, and sacrifice.  For their actions that night the four chaplains were awarded the
Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart, posthumously.

Memorial Day Weekend Is Not Just for BBQ’s

On Saturday, May 23rd Yorktown Post #1009 will again be manning tables at both the Shrub Oak A&P
Supermarket and the Triangle Mall Supermarket to hand out traditional red poppies and collect donations.  This
annual fundraising event is used to remind the public of the true reason that Memorial Day is a national
holiday.  This holiday wasn’t instituted to be a weekend designed for BBQ’s and fun.  This day was set aside
to remember the sacrifices of the deceased veterans of all wars and conflicts throughout the history of our
great country.  The funds that we collect during this event are used to support our Post’s local programs.  1st
Vice Commander Al Laughlin and our usual dedicated Post volunteers will be out that Saturday morning from 9
AM to 1 PM to keep our programs funded in these fiscally tight times.  We would love to see some new faces
help out with this event.  If you wish to help with this please contact Al at 914-528-6221, or Pat at 914-953-
6807, or stop by that morning at either location.

                                                                           Thank You…

We wish to thank Ken Blish, Al Laughlin, Ted Foster, and Bob Dagnino for all their hard work during
the Westchester County American Legion Meeting which was held at our own Post #1009 on March 11th.  They
set up for it, served pizza to our guests, and cleaned up afterwards.  Without dedicated volunteers like these
our Post could easily fade away.

                                                                   Our 50/50 Raffle…

The Post’s Memorial Day 50/50 Raffle is now going on.  All members were mailed Raffle tickets and
we ask everyone to help the Post and take part in it.  The Post purchases over 400 American flags for
placement at the graves of veterans buried in Yorktown.  This and other Memorial Day Parade expenses are
defrayed by this Raffle.  Please take some chances.

                                                                   Memorial Day Parade

This year, the 2009 Yorktown Memorial Day Parade is on Monday, May 25th and is being organized by
our Post.  Just throw on a baseball cap denoting your military service, or pick-up one of our Post’s baseball
caps for $15 and meet us at the Yorktown Town Hall at 10:45 AM.  After the wreath-laying ceremony there,
we march to the DeVito Veterans’ Memorial Field gazebo for the main ceremonies.  This parade is a
wonderful chance to honor our country’s fallen veterans and keep their memory alive in our community.  It
seems that each year our Post’s marching contingent gets a little smaller.  As some of our regular marching
members get a little too old to march we need our younger members to step up and keep our American Legion
visible in Yorktown.  We really need every Post member to make an effort to show up and march with us.
You’ll have a good time and get to know your fellow Legionnaires at the same time.

Armed Forces Day Parade May 16, 2009

The Westchester County Armed Forces Day Parade has evolved into such an inspiring success story
over the past two years it was held in Valhalla that the County has taken the parade on the road!  This year’s
parade will be held on Saturday, May 16th 2009 in the Village of Sleepy Hollow.  The parade begins at 1 PM on
Beekman Avenue and will proceed down to the river at Horan’s Landing.  All veterans are invited to attend
and to participate in the parade.  We don’t have an organized contingent from the Post going to the parade
but if members are interested in going as a group we can coordinate this at the May Post meeting.

NYS Security ‘Freeze’ Puts Identity Theft on ‘Ice’

What is a ‘Security Freeze’?  A security freeze means that your credit history cannot be shared with
potential creditors.  A security freeze can help prevent new account identity theft.  Most businesses will not
open credit accounts without first checking a consumer’s credit history.  If your files are frozen even someone
who has your name and Social Security number probably would not be able to obtain credit in your name.  You
would have to lift this freeze in order to apply for any new line of credit yourself.  This may slow down your
ability to get credit, but severely hampers anyone fraudulently trying to get credit in your name.
To place a security freeze, you must write via certified mail, or overnight delivery, to each of the
three consumer reporting agencies.  The first placing of a security freeze is FREE.  Any subsequent placing will
cost $5, unless you provide proof that you a victim of identity theft or a victim of domestic violence, in
which case there is no fee.  Write to ALL THREE AGENCIES!
