Yorktown e-Legion Yorktown American Legion Post #1009 Volume No. 1 Issue No. 5 August / September 2008
Homeland Security and by the National American Legion organization. The hope is that everyone will take a few moments to make a plan, and put a few items away that would be used in an emergency. We are not talking only about large-scale 9/11 type terrorist attacks here. Any type and size of emergency could be made less stressful with a little advance preparation and planning. Do you remember last winter when your lights went out during the snowstorm? You grabbed the flashlight you keep ready for such times and found that the batteries were dying or dead. Did you ever get more batteries? Now is the time. We are now fully immersed in hurricane season with winter following close behind. You can stock up now on items like a battery-operated transistor radio, canned foods, a couple of gallons of purified water, flashlights, medicines, first aid supplies, blankets, some cash, emergency phone numbers, and medical information on your family members, and place it into a bin or box in your garage, or storage room. Then when, or if, a fire/ flood/ blackout, or some other emergency occurs… just grab the box and use it. If a toxic tanker truck spill requires your evacuation… grab the box and go! Now if an incident like this were to occur to your family and your home were evacuated—does everyone know where to go and meet? You all need an agreed upon location away from your home that you can call by phone, go to, and re-unite and see that everyone is O.K. It is as simple as that. A little preparation and planning will make an incident less stressful and safer for everyone in the family. For more information on disaster readiness and preparation contact Yorktown Post #1009, the Dept of Homeland Security, or you’re local Red Cross Chapter. * * * * * * * 2nd Annual VA Food Pantry Collection to be Held
canned food collection to benefit those veterans in need that rely on the V.A. Food Pantry at the V.A. Hospital in Montrose. Legionnaires will be manning tables in front of both the Yorktown Triangle A & P Supermarket and the Shrub Oak A & P Supermarket from 9 AM until 1 PM collecting non-perishable food items, and cash donations, for the Pantry. This is the most basic level of ‘Veterans Helping Veterans’. We are helping our fellow veterans survive with food. We all felt great doing this collection last year and we hope to keep it an annual Post event. For this event to be a success, WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need at least 4 people at each supermarket during the entire collection time to allow for breaks without leaving the tables unmanned. Please call and volunteer to help us with this very worthwhile event. Call Patrick McDonough at 914-953- 6807, or Al Laughlin at 914-528-6221. * * * * * *
