Yorktown e-Legion

Yorktown American Legion Post #1009                     Volume No. 1                  Issue No. 1                   October 2007

                         Yorktown Post #1009 Launches Newsletter
Welcome to the inaugural issue of Post #1009’s newsletter, the ‘Yorktown e-Legion’.  We hope this
newsletter will help us to get our message out to our members and the public.  The name ‘e Legion’ reflects
our Post’s efforts to be a part of the computer information age.  It is our hope to e-mail this newsletter to the
membership four to six times a year to keep everyone abreast of events and news pertaining to our Post
#1009.  We realize that not everyone has access to a computer to receive this newsletter and we will not
forget those members.  We will print up copies of the newsletter and leave them on the bar at the Post for
anyone to stop in and pick-up to read.
For this newsletter to become a successful tool in communicating with you, our membership, we need
your input.  We can just recap the Post’s past events and give updates on future events, but that would get a
little monotonous.  We could have members send us their questions and the Post could find out the answers
and publish them.  I’m sure that many of our members have similar questions on subjects and many would
benefit from the answers.  In order to get this newsletter and its information out to you, we need your e-mail
addresses.  Now we know everyone with a computer gets his or her share of spam and unsolicited e-mails.
The e-mail addresses would be used ONLY for the Newsletter mailings.  You can contact us through our
Website at: www.nylegion1009.org or e-mail us at post1009@nylegion1009.org.  Please let us know if we could
send you our OFFICIAL Post Business e-mails (i.e. meeting/ event announcements, Post program updates) to
keep you informed of items that can’t wait until our next newsletter or meeting.  We will respect your wishes
in this matter and your e-mail address will never be released by us.
Why publish an e-Newsletter?  Cost is the number one reason.  To print up 125 copies of a 2 sided
newsletter costs about $17.50.  To mail those 125 copies out costs $52.50!  To send out six issues a year would
be $420 a year.  To do this via e-mail costs nothing.  Last March 17th, 2007 we launched our Post’s Website
(www.nylegion1009.org) as one way of keeping our members informed and also to possibly catch the eye of
prospective new members surfing the Web!  By using this site for the e-mail there is no additional cost.  As
we mentioned before we will still print up copies of the newsletter and have them at the Post for people to
pick-up and read.  Write us, e-mail us, and tell us, what you think about this newsletter so that we can make
it something you WANT to read.

                                                    Veteran’s Day is November 11th…
                                                                          March With Us
Imagine the crowds’ reaction when they see 125 American Legionnaires walking through town!  This town
wants to thank you!  Please take the time to walk with us this year.  The preferred attire is the Legion cap,
gray slacks, blue blazer, and white shirt with tie.  If you don’t have that… We want you to march with us so
dress neatly with a military cap if you have one.   We meet and form up at 1:30 PM in the Lakeland HS parking
lot.  The parade begins at 2 PM.  We walk to the Hart Library along East Main Street.  The crowds always
warmly greet us.  You’ll feel pride in yourself and your accomplishment as a veteran.  JOIN US!

                                              Win $1000 in Westchester County’s
                                                 Holiday Special Fundraising Raffle
We would like to encourage you all to participate in the sale of the Westchester County American Legion
Holiday Special Fund-raiser raffle tickets.  The raffle is used to raise money for both the County Legion as well
as the local Posts like ours.  Each Post receives half of the money from sales of its raffle tickets.  We will be
sending every member a book to sell.  We hope you can help.  You will be doing our Post a huge favor by
selling your tickets and more if you can.  Everyone is aware that the price of heating oil went sky high last
year and never went back down.  The price of insurance also went up after all of the insurance claims after
Hurricane Katrina.  Both of these costs have hurt Post #1009 financially.  This fundraiser will help both the
County Legion as well as our own Post.  Please make the effort to sell and return the raffle tickets.  If you can
sell more, we have some at the Post bar, or contact us through our Website, or e-mail.  We also wish good
luck to all in winning the 1st prize of $1000, 2nd prize of $750, 3rd of $300, 4th of $200, and 5th prize of $100.

State Grant Repaves Our Parking Area
Post Financial Officer John McQuillan has one of those jobs that when its done right, nobody really notices.
The bills get paid, the heat and the lights stay on and nobody notices.  That’s not the case anymore.  We have
a beautiful new blacktop parking area in front of the Post due to John’s thoroughness in his work.  Post #1009
was awarded a grant from NY State to repair the old hazardous parking area.  The hump that appeared after
previous construction made the driveway a lawsuit waiting to happen.  John’s hard work has saved the Post
from the threat of an injury lawsuit as well as made the Post look sharp and professional.  Be sure to thank
    John when you see him.

                                                                    What Do You Want?
Last year the Post held Pasta Nights, Chili Nights, and a Corned Beef and Cabbage Night but nothing
seemed to bring the membership in for an evening of food and conversation.  We have charged only $10.00
per person for the dinner, beverages, dessert and coffee.  You can’t even beat that deal at the golden arches
anymore.  This year we had a BBQ that was free to members and only 15 people came to eat.  We need your
input on what we should have.   What would bring you back to your Post for dinner?  We want to know.
