| Yorktown e-Legion Yorktown American Legion Post #1009 Volume No. 1 Issue No. 5 June/ July 2008
Westchester County’s 2008 Convention Yorktown Post #1009 was the recipient of two awards from the Westchester County American Legion during their 2008 Convention, held at Post #1009 on June 7th. Our Post’s Convention Co-Chairmen, Bob Dagnino and Patrick McDonough, outdid themselves for the second year in a row preparing for the event. Last year our Post hosted the Convention as well. This year over 130 people from all over Westchester County attended the Convention. After the Convention closed, many guests stayed to enjoy the Post’s buffet dinner afterwards. Post #1009 thanks COMMERCE BANK in Jefferson Valley for their generous $500 donation to help offset the cost of the Convention. We also extend our thanks to PEPSI- COLA and DUNKIN’ DONUTS for their contributions towards making the Convention a great success. Our Post was honored to receive two awards from the Westchester County American Legion during the Convention. Post #1009 was noted for ‘Excellence in Rehabilitation’ for the work our members have performed at the V.A. Hospital in Montrose. The once a month parties held by the County always put smiles on the faces of the Veterans there. Everyone should make the effort to attend at least one of these parties to give something back to those who really need the emotional boost. Post #1009 was also named Westchester County’s ‘Outstanding Post’ for the year! This past year we have been both busy and more visible in both the County and our own Yorktown. We have been host to two County Conventions, held a food collection for the Food Pantry at the VA Hospital in Montrose, sponsored Boy Scout Troop #164 and Cub Scout Pack #251, helped out with the parties at the Montrose VA, helped with the annual holiday ‘Toys-for-Tots’ collection, launched a Post Website and this e-newsletter for the benefit of our members. Yes, we have had a good year! Election of Officers For 2008 / 2009 At the May General Membership meeting our present Board of Officers were re- elected to another year of service to the Post. Commander Ken Blish is beginning his 5th year leading the Post. We need all members to step forward and become more active in the Post. Joining Ken for another year is; Al Laughlin 1st Vice Commander Charles Ludlum 2nd Vice Commander Dave Moskowitz 3rd Vice Commander Ted Foster Adjutant John McQuillan Financial Officer Terry DeVeau Sgt-at-Arms Memorial Day Parade Beautiful weather and warm welcoming crowds made our Memorial Day Parade a great success. Some new faces from the Post marched with us this year. We hope to see those new faces, and maybe a few more of you, marching with us from now on. We were honored and pleased to have Jared Hansen, back safe from his 2nd tour of duty in Iraq, Jason Desai, who is preparing to deploy to Iraq, and Post member and retired Air Force Chaplain Thomas Sandi march in uniform with the Post. Jared is the son of Post #1009 member George Hansen. Everyone felt Jared was an old friend from the Post because of all of the news updates we received from his Dad while he was deployed. WELCOME HOME JARED… Job well done! After the parade, the Yorktown Lions and Leos helped serve almost 700 free hot dogs and beverages to everyone who stopped by the Post! Many distinguished guests always make a point to stop by the Post to say thanks to our veterans on Memorial Day. We had Rep John Hall, Yorktown Supervisor Don Peters, and Ossining Supervisor Linda Cooper stop in and chat with everyone at the Post. Join us for next year’s parade and march to honor those who have fallen while serving in our country’s Armed Forces. Remembering Memorial Day with Poppies and Flags The Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend saw Yorktown Post #1009 doing its best to educate the public and honor our deceased veterans. We accomplished this in two ways. That morning 10 Legionnaires were out at two A&P Supermarkets conducting one of our more successful Poppy Fundraisers in recent years. Ken Blish, Al Laughlin, Anne Samoylo, Bob Dagnino, Bill Lewis, Charlie Ludlum, Dave Moskowitz, Tom Brady, Terry DeVeau, and Patrick McDonough donated a couple of hours to hand out traditional red poppies and collect needed donations to help our local programs. This gave us the opportunity to remind everyone about the real reason for Memorial Day. While the fundraiser was going on elsewhere, John McQuillan, our Post Financial Officer, was co-coordinating Cub Scout Pack #251 and Boy Scout Troop #164 in placing American flags supplied by the Post at the graves of the veterans buried throughout Yorktown. The Post sponsors both of these Scouting units and their young men placed over 500 flags to honor Yorktown’s veterans that day. Congratulations to all of the Scouts and their leaders on a job well done!
Post #1009 will have a hotdogs and hamburgers BBQ on Sunday, August 17th at 3 PM for all members and their families. The BBQ will allow everyone to keep in touch over the summer, and allow our new members to informally get the chance to meet everyone. After the BBQ we can all step across the street to the DeVito Memorial Gazebo where the Town of Yorktown will be sponsoring a free concert at 6 PM. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to sit on and enjoy the evening’s music. The musical group “Fallout” will be performing that night. Please try to join us for this event to meet and enjoy the company of your fellow Post members.
